New Solar Power Project to Light 8,000 Households in South Ethiopia

The Dome Gero solar power project, constructed in Salamago Wereda of South Omo Zone in the South Ethiopia Regional State at a cost of over 400 million Birr through the collaboration of the Ministry of Water and Energy and Ethiopian Electric Utility, has been completed and started providing service.

The project will enable some 8,000 households to get electricity. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the State Minister for the Energy Development Sector at the Ministry of Water and Energy, Dr. Eng. Sultan Wali, stated that the project inaugurated today was built at a cost of over 400 million Birr and will provide electric power to more than 6,000 members of the community.

The Honorable State Minister added that to provide power to community members living in very remote areas, seven out of the nine projects intended to be built in the region under the ADELE project funded by a loan from the World Bank have been completed and are currently providing service, including the one inaugurated today.

He noted that these projects will help ensure holistic prosperity by solving the social and economic problems of the local community. Finally, the Honorable State Minister delivered a message stating that the local community should protect the project as its own property.

On his part, the representative of Ethiopian Electric Utility, Mr. Melaku Taye, stated that the institution has built and started operating 7 solar power plants in the region in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Energy to make rural kebeles beneficiaries of electricity.

He further explained that the project, built to provide electricity to the local community, has a generation capacity of 625 kW and is capable of providing service for 20 years. High-level regional officials, experts, elders, and residents were present at the program.
