Ethiopian Electric Utility this week inaugurated electric vehicles (EV) fast-charging station in Addis Ababa that can charge 24 vehicles at the same time.
According to the Utility’s Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Getu Geremew, large charging stations are being built to expand options for users. He pointed out that more than 140,000 electric vehicles have entered Ethiopia; however, there are not enough charging centers corresponding to the number of vehicles.
To solve this problem, he noted that work is underway in the first phase to build more than 40 charging stations nationwide.
It was indicated that the station was built through the cooperation of the Ethiopian Electric Utility and the Industrial Parks Development Corporation.
The Chief Executive Officer stated that the stations built so far provide service throughout the week and mentioned that three payment options per kilowatt are available for users.
Accordingly, the cost is 14.85 birr from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, 16.57 birr from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and 18.28 birr from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM as well as from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
State Minister of Transport and Logistics, Bero Hassan, for his part, explained that Ethiopia is expanding charging stations for electric vehicles.
He said this is an indication that the country’s leadership role in the sector is being built on a reliable foundation. The State Minister also emphasized that Ethiopia is providing a practical response to climate change in various ways.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Industrial Parks Development Corporation, Dr. Fisseha Yitagesu, expressed appreciation for the construction of the charging station, considering the increasing number of electric vehicles in the country.
