Telebirr Contribution to Ethiopia’s Journey Towards Inclusive Digital Economy

July 24, 2026

As stated in Ethio Telecom’s report released yesterday, during the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year ended July 7, 2026, the first year of the “Beyond Horizons: Digital and Beyond 2028” strategy, Telebirr maintained strong growth by processing 2.61 billion transactions, while the total transaction value reached ETB 4.19 trillion.

Additionally, Telebirr acquired 8.54 million new customers, bringing its total customer base to 60.6 million, achieving 96.9% of its annual target. Supporting its claim on these figures, Ethio Telecom argues that Telebirr has created an enabling environment for building an inclusive and accessible digital economy by making financial transactions simple, fast, and convenient.

In collaboration with Dashen Bank, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), Siinqee Bank, and Awash Bank, the company has been providing microloan, micro-savings, and overdraft services through Telebirr. During the fiscal year, 5.65 million customers received loans totaling ETB 19.51 billion, while 1.3 million customers saved a combined ETB 18.75 billion.

Overall, Telebirr is integrated with 33 banks and operates through a network of 410,700 agents and 440,100 merchants offering its services, significantly boosting the country’s digital financial ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Zemen Gebeya, Ethiopia’s growing fast digital marketplace (e-commerce platform), attracted more than 2.4 million visits during the fiscal year. The number of registered merchants on the platform reached 739. More than 58,300 customers completed 72,100 transactions, generating total merchandise sales exceeding ETB 377.9 million.
