More than 47,000 hectares of land have been covered with various crops during the current Ethiopian 2018/2019 Meher farming season in South Achefer district, North Gojjam Zone in Amhara Region of Ethiopia.
This is stated by the district’s Agriculture Office. The head of the office, Mr. Abebe Biyazen, said during a field visit to maize cluster farms with coordinating officials that the district had planned to cultivate 47,597 hectares of land to produce 2.6 million quintals of crops during the production season.
South Achefer district is bounded by the Agew Awi Zone to the south and west, Semien Achefer to the north, and Mecha to the east, with the Lesser Abay River marking the eastern boundary. It is located 60 km from Bahir Dar and 502 km from Addis Ababa. The district relies heavily on crop production, especially maize and teff, alongside livestock.
According to the latest report, 47,122 hectares of land have already been planted with various types of crops. The head of the office also stated that cluster farming, which follows modern and scientific agricultural practices, is being implemented to increase maize productivity — one of the district’s major crops—and to improve the benefits farmers receive from their production.
He further urged farmers not only to complete planting but also to carry out the necessary monitoring and proper crop management to protect their fields from weeds and pests.
