The regional bloc in the horn of Africa, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) condemns the attack on Djibouti soldiers by an armed group.

The Executive Secretary of IGAD, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, condemns this week attacked Djibouti soldiers by an armed group that led to the death of several soldiers. “The attack on the Tadjourah Regiment of the Djibouti army at Garabistan on the evening of October 6, 2022, has killed seven soldiers and injured four, according to the information from Djibouti Government.



The Executive Secretary IGAD “condemns in the strongest terms possible the criminal and cowardly attack on the Tadjourah Regiment of the Djibouti army at Garabistan on the evening of October 6, 2022, that killed seven soldiers and injured four.”

IGAD in its statement stated that Dr. Workneh said that Djibouti is an oasis of peace and plays an important role in promoting peaceful coexistence in the region.

“The Executive Secretary conveys his deepest condolences to the Government and people of Djibouti and the families of the officers who were killed. He also wished speedy recovery to those injured and hopes that the 6 missing soldiers are found soon. He further added that those who committed this criminal act should be made to face justice.”

Media reports show that the armed attack is conducted by Afar ethnic group rebels known as FRUD Front, which on Friday reportedly took control of a Djiboutian army camp in Garabti-san in the Balho area bordering Ethiopia.

In its statement FRUD stated that “its latest attack was in response to the provocations and arrests that the residents near the camp were subjected to, in addition to their armed attack on the front’s followers”.
