Ethio Telecom Launches Toll Road Payment System via Tele Birr

In collaboration with the Ethiopian Toll Roads Enterprise, Ethio Telecom today launched a digital payment system for expressway users.

The digital payment system “Tolo” through available on Tele Birr is designed to improve user experience by digitally integrating services on the Addis Ababa–Adama Expressway, which plays a key role in the country’s economic activity, according to Ethio Telecm.

Speaking at the launch, the Enterprise’s CEO, Mustafa Abasimele, stated that the new service and penalty payment management system fully replaces the previous manual system with a modern automated process.

He also explained that previously, due to limited digital infrastructure, it was not possible to implement such an electronic payment system. However, the enterprise has now introduced a fully contactless payment system.

Ethio Telecom noted that this initiative demonstrates its commitment to building a transparent and efficient digital economy by modernizing government services, in line with the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy.

Through the Tele Birr Super App, the system enables automatic payments using self-service technology, allowing vehicles to pass without stopping for payment making travel faster and more convenient.

The major expressways in Ethiopia are the Addis Ababa – Adama; and the Modjo–Hawassa Expressway is a 202 km high-standard toll road connecting southern Ethiopia to national and regional trade networks.
