The Ministry of Revenue of Ethiopia says the country has collected 1.1 trillion Birr Tax Revenue in nine months of the current Ethiopian calendar started July 8, 2025.
This is stated this week at a forum organized to discuss the implementation of the 9-month plan for the 2018 fiscal year, the Digital Transformation Strategy 2030, and the World Bank-supported projects.
Ms. Aynalem Nikusse, from the Ministry noted that 1.1 trillion birr was collected in 9 months and expressed her appreciation for the efforts of the ministry’s leaders and implementers to achieve this result.
She also stated that although we are recording successful tax collection, the ratio of tax we collect to national product is still low. She stressed that in order to narrow this gap and achieve the remaining three-month plan, we should focus on debt, value added tax (VAT) collection, and identifying potential sectors.
The Minister also stressed that we should continue the work that has achieved change and progress in the remaining three months; and work diligently on those that have been lacking. In addition, she conveyed the message that the country’s resources and working time that are wasted in the process of filing complaints should be saved by approaching the taxpayer.
The Head of the Ministry’s Office, Ato Fikadu Tadesse, presented a document on the analysis of the 9-month plan performance report and the activities that will enable the institution to fully achieve its annual plan if they work diligently in the next three months.
Similarly, the Ministry’s Tax Affairs Advisor, Mr. Simegn Nigusse, presented a document focusing on the mechanism for strengthening effective tax debt collection in the Ministry, and the Ministry’s Tax Transformation Program Office (TTO) Ato Eskinder Mesfin presented documents regarding the work being done to achieve the Digital Transformation Strategy 2030, and discussions were held.
Finally, Mr. Brooke Mansile, the Project Coordinator for World Bank-supported projects, briefed the ministry on the plans and activities that have been implemented. He also expressed his readiness to support future activities that will help modernize tax collection.
The discussion forum was attended by senior officials, directors, and managers of all branch offices of the Ministry of Revenue.
