Ethiopia to welcome Eritrean delegation this week

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia said the country is preparing to welcome the delegation of Eritrea coming this week. This has come following Ethiopia’s ruling party coalition decision few weeks ago to end the no peace no war relation with its neighbor and willingness to implement the UN-mediated Algiers Agreement signed in December 2000.

Not long after President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea indicated his country’s plan to send delegation to Ethiopia by accepting the offer from Ethiopia’s new leadership, which has been on fast track of political and economic reform for the past few months.

The decision of the two nations to end their dispute has been welcome by major development allies of both countries.

“The recent announcement by Ethiopia that it is ready to fully implement the Algiers Agreement and the decision of the boundary commission, as well as the decision by the President of Eritrea to send a delegation to Addis Ababa to that end, are decisive steps towards the resolution of the longstanding differences between the two countries,” said European Union High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini.

“The settlement on the border issue would benefit Ethiopia and Eritrea as well as stability in the Horn of Africa region. In line with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission’s statement, the EU also stands ready – as a witness to the Algiers Peace Agreement – to assist Ethiopia and Eritrea on their path towards reconciliation,” said in a statement released following President Isaias Afwerki’s plan to send delegation last week.
