The National Bank of Ethiopia today announced the complete removal of the restriction previously imposed on private banks in the country from issuing export trade permits for products shipped to the People’s Republic of China.
The decision aims to further facilitate Ethiopia’s export trade sector, enhance competitiveness, and create more convenient and accessible banking services for exporters.
Previously, under the broader economic and financial cooperation agreement between the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Government of the People’s Republic of China, export trade permits for goods destined for China were allowed to be issued only through the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), according to letter number BAWMDA/097/99.
However, in its newly issued statement, the National Bank confirmed that this earlier restriction has now been fully lifted.
Accordingly, starting from Ginbot 18, 2018 E.C. (May 26, 2026), all export trade products destined for the People’s Republic of China may have their export permit documentation processed, along with related banking services, through any licensed bank operating in Ethiopia.
The National Bank has also strongly instructed all commercial banks to provide the service immediately to their customers in accordance with the country’s existing export trade and foreign exchange regulations.
This decision is expected to create broader market opportunities and improved access to banking services for investors engaged in export trade, which is anticipated to bring significant momentum and growth to the sector.
