Ethiopian Airlines envisions to transport 60 million passengers annually (triple the current volume) by 2040, according to ‘Vision 2040″ the fully state-owned aviation group revealed today.
The CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Mr. Mesfin Tasew indicated that by 2040, the airline plans to expand its current 145 international destinations to 203. To support this growth, it also plans to increase its modern aircraft fleet from the current 150 to 250 and beyond. He made the remark at an even that marked the airline’s 80th anniversary since its first flight to Cairo, Egypt. The plan is designed to make the institution a leading global competitor elevating the airline from its current position as “Africa’s leading carrier to a higher level of global competitiveness”.
It is stated that the airline, which currently transports 20 million passengers annually, aims to triple this number to reach 60 million passengers by 2040. It is also stated that this will enable the company to generate nearly 30 billion dollars in annual revenue.
Since the current Bole International Airport is not sufficient to accommodate the planned massive growth, the CEO explained that a new ultra-modern airport with an initial capacity of 60 million passengers per year is being constructed in Bishoftu city.
In addition to international flights, to improve domestic transportation, an agreement has been reached with the government to increase domestic destinations from the current 23 to 47.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Mesfin Tasew expressed his gratitude to past and present employees for the success recorded over the past 80 years.
He also confirmed that Ethiopian Airlines will continue to serve as a pillar of Ethiopia’s development, economic, and social growth, as well as a source of national pride.
