By Yordanos Tadesse – The total number of Ethiopia’s national digital identification (ID) known as Fayda, users have reached 37.5 million people.
This is indicated by Mr. Yodahe Arayaselassie, Executive Director of the National ID Office, stated at the forum that 37.5 million people have registered for the National ID. This is indicated today at a National ID awareness creation forum held at the Addis Ababa Hilton Hotel. It was reported that there are approximately 1 million national ID registrants every week.
He also noted that there are approximately 1 million registrants every week. Executive Director Mr. Yodahe Arayaselassie mentioned that under the current plan, work is being done to reach a coverage of up to 90 million by this coming June.
He also passed a message to the media to play their part. Over the past 8 months, National Digital ID services have been accessible mostly in rural areas. It was stated that work is being done to make it widely accessible.
The National ID Program (NIDP) is working to enroll and provide unique digital identification numbers to all residents in Ethiopia with the goal of providing advanced financial, social, public, and other services that identify a physical person using foundational individualizing mechanisms rather than functional ones.
NIDP intends to issue Digital IDs to over 70 million citizens and residents in Ethiopia by the end of 2025. The program will be utilizing a variety of set strategies for enrollment, authentication, technology, stakeholder engagement, communications, and other range of important strategies put in place to achieve its ambitious enrollment targets.
