The National Defense Force of Ethiopia has liberated Mekele, the capital of TIgray region, from the control of Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF). The federal police is now searching to capture and bring to court the leaders wanted for treason and war crimes, among others.

“I am pleased to share that we have completed and ceased the military operations in the Tigray region. Our focus now will be on rebuilding the region and providing humanitarian assistance while Federal Police apprehend the TPLF clique,” Prime Minister Abiy twitted.

The Ethiopian army has launched an offensive attack on the group, after TPLF militias attacked the northern army command based in Tigray on November 4, 2020. TPLF latter has admitted attacking the northern command, it what it called “to protect itself from possible attack by the federal government”.

The offensive operation so far is taken with precision and due care for citizens ensuring civilians are not targeted, according to the statement made by Prime Minister Abiy.

Appreciating the cooperation of the people of TIgray to the army all the way to Mekele City, Prime Minister Abiy in its statement said, “…We now have ahead of us the critical task of rebuilding what has been destroyed; repairing what is damaged; returning those who have fled, with utmost priority of returning normalcy to the people of the Tigray region.”

Chief of Staff of Ethiopian Defense Force, General Birhanu Jula, has indicated that after fully controlling Mekele City, the army has rescued some 7,000 army officers of northern command who were under TPLF control.

Most of the old guards of TPLF have been at loggerheads with the Federal Government of Ethiopia after the ruling coalition – Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) elected Abiy Ahmed as its leader in April 2018.

After overthrowing the Derg Regime in 1991 partnering with other ethnic armed groups, for 27 years TPLF was the dominant party in EPRDF, which comprises Oromo, Amhara and Sothern political parties. The conflict between the TPLF and the federal government got serious when the latter issued arrest warrant for some of the highly corrupted and officials engaged in crimes against humanity, including the former intelligence head Getachew Asseffa.
