Ethio Telecom cut Internet tariff 65 percent

Ethio Telecom, the state owned telecommunications services provider in Ethiopia, announces 65 percent discount on broadband Internet for corporate clients.

This is announced this morning by the Chef Executive Officer of Ethio Telecom, Frehiwot Tamru, who briefed reports. She indicated that the decision has come as a result of feedback from customers and with the aim of increasing the number of enterprises that use broadband Internet users. Individual broadband Internet users will also be beneficiary of 69 percent discount, according to Frehiwot.



In addition to more private sector inclusion, the discount is also expected to improve service quality and delivery of state enterprises and agencies, according to the CEO. At the end of July 29019, Ethio telecom total subscribers have reached 43.6 million which is 95 percent of the target and an increase of 15 percent from the previous budget year. This figure results tele-density of 44.5 percent. Mobile voice subscribers are 41.92 Million, Data and Internet users 22.3 Million and Fixed Services 1.2 million, according to the latest annual report of Ethio Telecom.

The 123 years old telecom services provider in Ethiopia has recently launched a three years strategy to improve its services.

It is recalled that the Government of Ethiopia has recently announced its plan to liberalize the telecom sector and end Ethio Telecom’s monopoly in telecommunication services provision. The plan of the government is to sell minority share (up to 41 percent) of Ethio Telecom to foreign telecom company/ies and add two more telecom operators. The government is expected to announce the telecom companies selected to enter Ethiopian market in the coming few months.
