The Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) Generation Business Unit has announced that it generated more than 35,670 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity during the Ethiopian fiscal year ended July 7, 2026.
The amount represents 21 percent more than the electricity the country generated the previous year. Out of the total the total, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) Hydropower Plant contributed 51.5 percent.
This is indicated by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer for the Generation Business Unit, Engineer Ephrem Woldekidan, who stated that the the institution had planned to generate 38,124.78 GWh during the fiscal year but successfully produced 35,670.99 GWh. He noted that this represents 93.6 percent of the annual target and marks a 21 percent increase compared to the electricity generated during the same period in the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year.
The Deputy CEO further stated that, of the total electricity generated during the fiscal year, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) Hydropower Plant contributed 51.5 percent, while the Gibe III Hydropower Plant and the Beles Hydropower Plant accounted for 17.8 percent and 7 percent, respectively.
