Ethiopia spent one billion USD for fertilizers import

The Government of Ethiopia has spent one billion US dollars for importing fertilizers during the current budget year, said the Ministry of Agriculture of Ethiopia.

This is indicated today at the Ethiopian Parliament where the Ministry presented its report to the standing committee of agriculture. State Minister at the Ministry of Agriculture of Ethiopia Sofia Kassa (PhD), who is in charge of agricultural investment and inputs, has indicated that after securing one billion US dollars from the Government, purchase of 12.8 million quintals of fertilizers is made.



She stated that out of the total 4.95 million quintals is already distributed to farmers, while 3.5 million quintals is distributed to regions, and the remaining 4.3 has arrived at Djibouti Port.

The state agency, Agriculture Works Corporation of Ethiopia, is currently engaged in distribution of the imported fertilizers to farmers union, and private sector, according to the information obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture.



During the discussion it is stated that Ethiopia has managed to produce 16 million quintals of wheat using irrigation on 405,000 hectares of land. The Ministry also indicated that this year Ethiopia has managed to export 170 tons of avocado though the plan was 200 tons.
