Addis Ababa at Loggerheads with Fuel Traffickers

Following the shortage of fuel, the Addis Ababa City Peace and Security Administration Bureau, says it has been combating illegal fuel traders and traffickers.

As part of its efforts to legalize fuel distribution, the Bureau has seized over 58,000 liters of fuel being circulated illegally in the past 15 days, according to the report of Addis Media Network. “Administrative and legal measures have reportedly been taken against more than 10,000 traders involved in illegal price hikes, operating without business licenses, or engaging in illicit trade,” it said.

The report also stated that 35 individuals suspected of these illegal acts have been brought before the law. It was also noted that tangible results have been recorded through the oversight work conducted during these months. Significant quantities of cooking oil and sugar were reported to have been seized.

The Addis Ababa City Law Enforcement and Oversight Subcommittee has conducted a detailed review of activities performed over the last four months. Head of the Addis Ababa City Peace and Security Administration Bureau, Ms. Lydia Girma, stated that extensive regulatory work is being carried out to enforce the rule of law and rectify the trade system within Addis Ababa.
