Gambella Crop Production Increases by 1.6 Million Quintals

Crop production of Gambella Region of Ethiopia during the 2025/26 production season has increased by 1.6 million quintals compared to the same period last year.

This is indicated by the President of the Gambella Region, Alemitu Omod, who stated that the region has produced a total of 6.2 million quintals of produce were collected by developing over 186,000 hectares of land. She made the remark during the Regional Council meeting held on Monday, where the performance report of the region’s half budget year development and good governance plan was presented, according to the state news wire – ENA’s report.

It is also reported that to enhance the region’s revenue capacity, the report indicated that more than 2.3 billion Birr was collected during the half year. In Ethiopia agriculture represents over a third of the country’s economy. Gambella’s economy is primarily based on subsistence agriculture (maize, sorghum), livestock and fishing mainly in the Baro River.

Agriculture is the backbone of Ethiopia’s economy, contributing roughly 34-45% of GDP, over 85% of employment, and nearly 90% of exports. Key outputs include coffee (top exporter), cereals (maize, sorghum, teff), oilseeds, pulses, and flowers. Reports also show that Ethiopia is also Africa’s second-largest maize producer and a leading wheat producer.
