Ankober District, one of the leading honey-producing areas in North Shewa Zone, has produced more than 104 tons of honey during the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year.
According to Mulugeta Abebe, Head of the District Livestock and Fisheries Development Office, the district had planned to produce 104 tons of honey during the fiscal year. Through coordinated efforts, it successfully exceeded the target by producing 104.2 tons. A total of 2,389 farmers, including 137 women, participated in honey production during the reporting period.
To improve both the quality and quantity of honey production, the district provided awareness training to farmers and expanded the use of modern and transitional beehives. Improved nectar-producing forage plants suitable for bees were also planted to enhance honey production.
Mr. Mulugeta stated that continuous training was provided to ensure community participation and benefits. He also noted that, in collaboration with various non-governmental organizations, honey filtering equipment was supplied to producers.
To help honey producers receive fair returns for their work, the district also facilitated reliable market linkages, enabling farmers engaged in honey production to access better market opportunities and benefit more from their products.
