Ethiopia charges former electricity boss for corruption

The government of Ethiopia has charged the former Chief executive officer of Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), Eng. Azeb Asnake for corruption along with Metal Engineering Corporation (METEC) officials.

She is charged in related to the under-construction Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). She is suspected of involving in corruption in clearing of the forest around GERD construction site, according to the state news agency, ENA, which indicated that she is charged along with 50 other people.



Among the charged former officials include Colonel Mulu Woldegabriel, who was deputy of Ethiopian military company – Metal Engineering Corporation (METEC).

Eng. Azeb was sacked from her position in August 2018. Her online profile shows that Azeb has served in various capacities and positions, reaching the position of engineering department head.

She was then transferred to the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation, where she was assigned manager of the Gibe III Hydroelectric Power Project that has a designed generation capacity of 1870 MW. In addition, she was serving as the CEO of EEP.

Eng. Azeb has also served as chair of the East African Power Pool (EAPP), which has nine member countries.
