Somali capital Jigjiga City gets 5G services

Ethio Telecom on Tuesday, officially launched 5G Internet service in Jigjiga city, Somali Region of Ethiopia.

The Jigjiga launch followed its earlier official launch in the capital, Addis Ababa and Adama cities. “As part of its commitment to realizing the country’s digital transformation agenda, the company has been deploying the latest technologies and providing digital solutions to positively impact the day-to-day life and business activities of society,” Ethio Telecom said.



“Our esteemed customers can now enjoy 5G service in the following areas: Parliament Hall, Hodley (Palace and Airport Road), Sheik Abdusalam School, Old Taiwan, Regional Administration Office, Regional Revenue Office, and Ethio Telecom Regional office. Additionally, 5G service will soon be accessible around Jigjiga University, Jigjiga Sheik Hassen Yabare Referral Hospital, New Taiwan, Kebele 06 (Ahmed Gurey School), and Jelaba,” it said.

Owned 100 percent by the Government of Ethiopia, Ethio Telecom has been a pioneering telecom service provider in Africa, serving the nation since 1894. 5G offers the fastest speeds (up to 10 Gbps), low latency (less than 1 ms), and massive communication capability (up to 1 million connections within 1 km2). “With such high speeds, superior reliability, and negligible latency, 5G will have a significant impact on industries such as mission-critical services requiring real-time decisions, manufacturing plants, remote healthcare, precision agriculture, self-driving vehicles, Internet of Things /IoT/, and real-time operations, making them a reality,” the company said in a statement.

The commercialization of 5G service will enable our society to obtain best-in-class digital solutions, improving their experience. At the launching it is stated that the 5G service will also play a paramount role for our business customers, enhancing their productivity and efficiency, generating new revenues with next-generation applications, improving operations with real-time analytics, adapting quickly to changes in business dynamics, and delivering secure and fast access to mission-critical data.



“Furthermore, the 5G service has tremendous significance for smart home, health services, hospital management, smart agriculture, education, industry/mining, manufacturing, smart airports and travel services, smart transportation, broadcasting & entertainment, as well as cloud-based 5G gaming,” the company stated.

“Our company has now commercialized its 5G service in Jigjiga city and is ready to offer unlimited 5G data, 5G To The Home, and a variety of 5G mobile packages to our esteemed customers. To take advantage of these diverse services and mobile packages, our customers are required to have mobile devices and handsets that support 5G,” said Ethio Telecom.
