Ethiopian parliament today approved the state of emergency declared in Amhara region by the Council of Ministers last week.
The proclamation is endorsed by the majority of members of parliament with 12 absentia and 16 against.
The need for the proclamation was elaborated by government chief whip, Tesfaye Beljige, who recalled that the draft was approved by the Council of Ministers on August 4, 2023.
He added that the violence has disrupted the regional government from carrying out its duties and underscored the importance of the bill to protect the country and ensure the peace and safety of our people. The parliament also approved the appointment of emergency act investigative board members.
