The President of the Supreme Court of Ethiopia, Meaza Ashenafi, and her deputy Solomon Areda have resigned and parliament approved today the individuals replacing them.

This is indicated today at the national parliament session, which voted on the individuals who are going to replace the two resigned individuals. Meanwhile it was not stated what forced the president and the deputy to resign. However the president has often heard opposing the acts of police whenever they refuse court orders to release prisoners.



During today’s parliamentary session 295 Members of the parliament have attended and approved the appointment of Tewodros Mihret (Mr.) and a university professor, as the new President of the Supreme Court of Ethiopia. It is stated that Tedros is Assistant Professor at the Addis Ababa University Law school. He has previous experiences in the dissolved state financial institution, Construction and Business Bank of Ethiopia, Bank of Abyssinia, and Birhan Insurance, among others.



The parliament today has also approved the appointment of Abeba Embiale Mengste to serve as Deputy President of Supreme Court of Ethiopia. It is stated that Abeba has been serving as a judge at federal court for the past three years. It is stated that she got her first degree in from Addis Ababa University and Masters in Law from Civil Service University.
