Ethiopian Parliament removes TPLF from terrorist list

The Ethiopian Parliament on Wednsday approved the resolution to remove the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) from its terrorist list.

The House of Peoples’ Represenative (HoPR) made the decision with 61 votes against, 5 abstentions and a majority vote. As it confirms to the Pretoria Peace Agreement made between the federal government and TPLF, the House discussed on the issue in depth and removed TPLF from the designation of being the terrorist.

It was stated during the presentation of the resolution that it is necessary to remove TPLF from the terrorism designation is aimed at bringing lasting peace based on the peace agreement signed in Pretoria that respects the constitutional system of the country, maintains the country’s sovereignty and protects the national interest of Ethiopia and all its citizens.

It is recalled that the two years’ civil war between the Government of Ethiopia and TPLF is reportedly cost lives of over half a million people from both sides with displacement of several millions and damage of properties worth billions of dollars. Though the war is concluded with a peace deal, so far one one is made accountable from both sides.
