Ethiopia collects $5.5 billion tax revenue

Over the past nine months (July 2019 to March 2020) the government of Ethiopia has collected 183.2 billion birr ($5.5 billion at the current exchange rate).

The Ministry of Revenue of Ethiopia said it has achieved 96% of its target for the period. It is stated that COVID-19 pandemic and the measures put in place by the government to contain the spread, which hindered the movement of people to some extent, has contributed to the decline of revenue over the past few months.



Meanwhile the Ministry also stated that the revenue is almost 26% higher than that of the same period the previous fiscal year.
Of the total revenue, about 100.7 billion birr (about $3 billion) was obtained from domestic (direct) tax, while 82.4 billion birr (close to $2.5 billion) is secured from customs.

National Lottery Authority, which is also one of the revenue stream of the Ministry has also earned close to 139.6 million birr (close to $4.2 million). It is recalled that the Ministry has reported collecting $3.5 billion during the first five months of the current fiscal year. At the end of the budget year, the Ministry if planning to collect a total revenue of 270.2 billion birr (about $8.1 at the current exchange rate).
