During the first six months of the current budget year of Ethiopia started July 8, 2021, Ethiopia has generated 7,668 gigawatt-hours (GWh) electricity.
This is indicated by the state power generation agency – Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP), which assessed its first six months performances. Compared to same period the previous year, the amount of electricity the country has generated has declined by 2 percent.
The decline is attributed due to the war in the northern part of the country where Tekeze Hydropower and Ashegoda wind farm are found. EEP stated that it was hard to get exact data about the two energy sources of the country found in Tigray region.
Meanwhile EEP has indicated that it has achieved 84.4 percent of its target for the six months period reviewed. Out of the total, 7,372 GWh was generated from hydropower, around 271 GWh from wind, and the remaining about 25 GWh was generated from geothermal, according to the report of EEP.
Egypt, which uses the transboundary water flowing from Ethiopia for its hydropower generation, has generated 14,000 GWh in 2021, according to the state media report AhramOnline.
