Food inflation in Ethiopia for the month of December 2022 has slightly decreased compared to the previous month, while non-food items inflation continues to grow.
It has declined from 37.5 percent in November 2022 to 36.8 percent in December 2022, according to the monthly report released by the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia. Meanwhile non-food items inflation in De ember 2022 has mounted to 29.8 percent from 29.1 percent in November 2022.
The report indicated that in most cases there was a decrease in prices of most cereals, pulses, edible oil and fats, meat and Milk, cheese and eggs which resulted in decrease of Food Inflation. In the Non-Food part Clothing and Footwear, Housing repair and mentenace goods, Fuel, Chat, Jewelry and Electronics goods prices showed an increase.
In December 2022, the year-on-year General inflation rate in Ethiopia has become 33.8 percent, after reaching 35.1 percent in the previous month. The main reasons for the December 2022 General inflation rate decrease was due to decrease in Food prices, according to CSA report.
The report also stated that the country level overall inflation rate (annual change based on 12 months Moving Average) rose by 33.9 percent in December 2022 as compared to the one observed in a similar period a year ago.
“The country level food inflation increased by 36.8 percent as compared to the one observed a year ago. The country level Non-food inflation rate increased by 29.8 percent in December 2022 as compared to the one observed in December 2021,” it said.
