Ethiopia food inflation rate reaches 21 percent

Moving average inflation rate for food items in Ethiopia for the month of February 2020 has gone up to 20.9 percent from 19.8 percent the previous month, the state agency said.

The monthly report released by the Central Statistics Agency (CSA) this afternoon shows that nationwide inflation rate for non-food items has also increased to 13.1 percent in February 2020 from it was 12.6 percent the previous month. General inflation rate has also gone up to 17.3 in February 2020 showing an increase of about one percent from the previous month.



The report shows that in February 2019, food inflation rate in Ethiopia was 11.7 percent, while non-food and general inflation at the time was 14.4 percent and 13 percent, respectively.

Similarly, CSA’s report also shows that food inflation rate in Ethiopia based on comparison of Consumer Price Index movements has gone up to 25.1 percent in February 2020 from 22 percent the previous month. While non-food inflation has reached 18 percent in February 2020 from 15 percent the previous month, according to the report. Likewise, general inflation rate for February has also increased to 21.8 percent from 18.7 percent in January 2020.

The report shows that in February 2019, food inflation rate in Ethiopia based on comparison of Consumer Price Index movements was 10.7 percent, while non-food and general inflation at the time was 11.2 percent and 10.9 percent, respectively.
