Six passengers die today in a tragic road crash in Ethiopia’s Sothern region Gedeo Zone around Yirgachefe area.

The six passengers died when an accident occurred on a bus with 45 passengers carrying capacity. In addition, 13 passengers are also severely injured, according to the report of Gedeo Zone Government Communication Affairs Department.



The report which quoted Yirgachefe wereda (district) Police Assistant Inspector Tamirat Mitiku, indicated that those who survived from the accident are currently getting medical treatment at the government Yirgachefe and Dilla referral hospitals.

In Ethiopia road traffic accidents have been common causing deaths of over 4,000 people every year, while several thousand sustain severe injuries. In addition, the accidents have also been major causes for private and public properties damages worth hundreds of millions of Birr annually.



At global level every year the lives of approximately 1.3 million people are cut short as a result of a road traffic crash, according to the World Health Organization. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury.
