Fano claims shooting Ethiopian army helicopter

The Amhara Fano, the armed group which has been fighting against the Ethiopian government led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, claims to short down a military helicopter carrying officials over the weekend.

According to media report by Anchor media run by former ESAT journalist Mesay Mekonnen which quoted Fano sources, the helicopter was about a few minutes away before landing at Gorgora Eco Resort in Amhara region on Sunday when shot down by RPG fired by Fano fighters. The report however didn’t mention the government or army officials who were aboard the chopper.

Meanwhile, the Amhara communications Bureau on its Facebook official page stated that the military helicopter had “encountered technical problem before landing at Gorgora Eco Resort and no one was injured”.

On the contrary, another digital publication Meseret Media, launched recently by the former AP corrrespondent Elias Merseret, has reported the death of a cameraman of Ethiopian News Agency Bizuayehu Birhanu, who was aboard the helicopter. Federal government officials are seen attending the funeral of the journalist in Addis Ababa. Meanwhile, they didn’t relate his death with the helicopter incident.

Another YouTube media, Meade Zena, run by the former ESAT journalist Dereje Habtewold, also reported the death of one army official, General Ayana Tura, who was aboard the helicopter.
