The Ministry of Education of Ethiopia, in collaboration with Huawei Ethiopia, organized a three-day digital training with the theme “empowering women with digital skills and supporting women’s leadership in technology.”

The first round of training was held from November 21 to November 23, 2022. Female instructors from various Ethiopian higher education institutions are among those taking part in the training. The second round begins on November 24, 2022. The training emphasized digital literacy (5G, AI, and cloud) as well as women in leadership.

Mr. Liming Ye, Huawei Ethiopia PR director, stated at the opening on November 21 that Huawei is exploring the value of digital technologies to improve women’s wellbeing in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education. The director said, “We are committed to helping women engage in tech and providing more opportunities and platforms for women to unleash their potential and lead our society to a more prosperous and equitable future.”

During the closing ceremony of the first round of training, Zelalem Assefa (Ph.D.), MOE’s CEO for ICT and digital education, stressed that the ministry of education is focused on human resource development in the ICT sector and working with private companies such as Huawei to get practical training that supports the education sector. He also commends Huawei for its cooperation in providing training for female teachers. He also stressed that as advances in modern technology bring us closer, we must overcome the gaps between men and women in terms of tech engagement and tech leadership.

According to Liming Ye, empowering women in the fields of ICT and increasing their visibility will open up a whole world of new possibilities and bring new technological and commercial advancements to the world. That’s why Huawei’s Statement on Gender Equality is “Tech for Her, Tech by Her, and Tech with Her.” Some trainees stated that because more of the classroom instruction is theoretical, practical training is required to supplement the gap.

Since 2008, Huawei has launched or sponsored multiple talent development program and competitions at the global, regional, and country levels, including scholarship programs, Seeds for the Future, Huawei ICT Academy, Huawei Developers Training, Huawei Cloud Developer Institute, Women in Tech, and Technology for Education.

In related news, 2022 seeds for the future program is also undertaking in Ethiopia from November 21 to November 28, and over 60 students are participating from different universities. The program offered an 8-day online training program that requires around 15 hours of devotion from the students. The course included basic and advanced levels courses on key technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, and AI.
