Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a bus heading to Mekele City of north Ethiopia carrying football players and killed one wounding several, the state broadcaster said.
The car carrying Tigray Police Walta Football Club players was attacked yesterday in Afar Region of Ethiopia around Gewane town, according to ETV Sport news aired this afternoon. Football player Amanuel Berhane was killed while other wounded by the attack are taken to a hospital for treatment.
So far, no detail is released about motive of the gunmen. The report stated that the Afar Regional State is carrying out investigations to bring to justice those who attacked the footballers. The Afar Regional State is one of the nine regional states of Ethiopia, and is the homeland of the Afar people.
