Customs Commission of Ethiopia said within one week period it has captured worth 67.5 million Birr contraband goods from people who tried to smuggle into and out of the country.
Out of the total the majority 63.8 million Birr goods were seized from people who brought the merchandizes into Ethiopia without fulfilling the necessary legal requirements, according to the Commission, which urged the public to continue collaborating in the fight against cross border illegal trade.
It is stated that Dire Dawa, Jigjiga, and Hawassa Customs branches are the major routes the contraband traders were using to smuggle the goods into Ethiopia from the neighboring countries. Garment and textiles, electronics, cosmetics, medicines, narcotic drugs, firearms, and vehicles are the major goods seized by the Commission.
