Ethiopia coffee export earnings up by $274 million

Export earnings of Ethiopia from coffee during the fist six months of Ethiopian Calendar started July 8, 2021, has increased by $274 million compared to same period last year.

The country has earned $578 million dollar exporting 148,882 tons of coffee in six months, according to Adugna Debela (PhD) the Director General of the state agency Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority. Ethiopia has earned a total of $304 million during the first six months of the previous year July 2020 – December 2020.



Germany was the top importer of Ethiopian coffee during the period importing 37,000 tons. It is followed by Saudi Arabia and Japan, according to the Ethiopian News Agency report. The volume of exported coffee of Ethiopia from July 2021 to December 2021 has increased by 57,000 tons compared to same period the preceding budget year.

Due to introduction of new policy in relation to improving productivity and trading of coffee, over the past three years export earnings of Ethiopia from coffee has been increasing.



The new trading system, which bypasses Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX), has allowed the farmers to sell their coffee to suppliers and exporters has contributed for the increase of Ethiopia’s coffee export. It is indicated that the new process has shortened the trading of coffee from four months to one month.
