Ethiopia opens door for China's eCommerce giant

With the aim of selling its products online, the government of Ethiopia and Alibaba’s Co-founder Jack Ma Foundation ink deal on Monday.

The deal allows Ethiopia, which is currently liberalizing its telecom sector, to introduce ecommerce. The two parties have signed three deals that will allow Ethiopia to implement ecommerce effectively, according to the statement from the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Ethiopia.



The signing ceremony is witnessed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia and Jack Ma. The officials of Alibaba Technology Group have signed the deal with the Minister of Innovation and Technology of Ethiopia, Getahun Mekuria (Dr./Eng.)

Prime Minister Abiy indicated that his government has given emphasis on building digital economy is critical for Ethiopia. Jack ma on his part stated that the ecommerce will enable Ethiopia to sell its products to the world using the new platform launched, Electronic World Trade Platform (e-WTP).
