Sidama zone, which is used to be part of the Southern region of Ethiopia today, becomes the 10th region of Ethiopia after referendum.
The people in Sidama zone have voted supporting the upgrading of the zone to region, according to the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia, which released the result this afternoon.
The Board stated that out of total 2,280,147 voters registered, 2,227,063 have come out and voted on Wednesday this week. Out of the voters 98.5 have voted in support of Sidama zone upgrading its current status to region level.
A region in Ethiopia can go as far as declaring independence after going through procedural process, according to the constitution of Ethiopia.
