Prime Minister of Ireland set to visit Ethiopia

With aim of strengthening diplomatic ties, the Prime Minister of Ireland Leo Varadkar is set to visit Addis Ababa, Ethiopia tomorrow.

During his official visit Prime Minister Varadkar is will hold discussions with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Sahlework Zewdie, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs.



The leaders will discuss issues of mutual interest. Ireland opened its embassy in Addis Ababa in 1994.

Ireland is one of the European countries supporting Ethiopia’s social and economic projects through Irish Aid.

For many years the Government of Ireland has been active in supporting humanitarian and social programs in Ethiopia, including health services improvement.

The Irish Aid agency is also known for providing assistance in support of the Ethiopia’s growth and poverty reduction plan so that the poor benefit from, and contribute to, equitable economic, social and environmental development.

From 2014 – 2018, the Government of Ireland has invested a total of 136 million euros on different programs in Ethiopia.

The country is also committed to the political reforms and extended unlimited support for Ethiopia’s effort to restore peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, accordig to the statement of the Ministry of Foreig Affairs.
