Ethiopia’s Prime Minister arrives Asmara

The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, arrives Asmara, Eritrea, this morning for official visit. Eritrean state TV has showed the Prime Minister’s and his delegation arrival at Asmara Airport with Ethiopian Airlines.

Eritrean TV has showed the reformist Prime Minister of Ethiopia and President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea welcomed by women in traditional dress waving palm fronds. Along with rows of officials they later walked to the airport VIP lounge and sat beneath portraits of themselves sipping juice.



Before Prime Minister Abiy’s arrival at Asmara, Yemane G.meskel, Eritrea’s Minister of Information, has also twitted, “Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, will arrive in Asmara this morning. This historic official visit, & the Summit that will take place between the two leaders of both countries, is the first of its kind for twenty years. It heralds a new era of peace and cooperation.”

PM Abiy’s chief of staff Fitsum Arega tweeted this morning: “Abiy Ahmed has left to Eritrea, Asmara today to further deepen efforts to bring about lasting peace between the people of Ethiopia & Eritrea,” “Our two nations share a history & bond like no other. We can now overcome two decades of mistrust and move in a new direction.”

This is the first time an Ethiopian high ranking official to visit Asmara in the last two decades. Between 1998-2000the two nations went to the bloody way the resulted in the losses of tens of thousands of lives from both sides.

About a week ago Addis Ababa has welcomed Eritrean high ranking officials who made two days official visit following Ethiopia’s call to end the hostilities between the two nations.

Prime Minister’s plan to visit Asmara and meet with Isaias Afwerki, President of Eritrea was announced during the Eritreans visit to Ethiopia.
