Eritrea to host Egypt, Somalia leaders

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki welcomes President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for a tripartite regional meeting

Both leaders will discuss enhancing bilateral ties, followed by a Tripartite Summit with President of Somalia to strengthen cooperation & address regional security challenges. “On the invitation of President Isaias Afwerki, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his delegation arrived in Asmara, in the late morning hours today, for an official visit. President el-Sisi and his delegation, which includes the Minister of National Security; the Chief of Presidential Cabinet; and, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, were accorded warm welcome by President Isaias Afwerki on their arrival at Asmara’s International Airport,” Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea Information Minister twitted.

“The two leaders will discuss enhancement of bilateral ties and other matters of mutual interest later in the day. This will be followed by a Tripartite Summit between President Isaias Afwerki, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on bolstering the ties between the three countries as well as matters of regional security and stability.”


Yester President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has also arrived Asmara, Eritrea and met with President Isaias Afwerki. It is recalled Egypt is at odds with Ethiopia in relation to Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam being builds on the River Abay, which is the major contributor of the Nile, which flows to Egypt via Sudan. Similarly, Eritrea, which was allies to Abiy Ahmed’s administration of Ethiopia during the Tigray war a few years back are in dispute over border and related issues as the two countries disconnected telephone line yesterday.

Somalia on the other hand has also been expressing its anger over Ethiopia’s move to open a naval base in the separated Somaliland, which it claimed is against its sovereignty.

The tripartite alliance among the three countries is expected to believed to be a strategic partnership against Abiy Ahmed’s Government.
