Ethiopia agrees to restore peace with Eritrea accepting UN decision

The delegation of Eritrean government sent by President Isaias Afwerki has arrived Addis Ababa this morning to start negotiations on the implementation of the Algiers Agreement signed by the two nations in December 2000 ending the bloody two years’ war.

Members of the delegation include Yemane Gebreab, Osman Saleh and Araya Desta. The delegation is expected to meet with Ethiopian officials and discuss on the details of the implementation of the Algiers Agreement as well as the restoration of the friendship between the brotherly people.

The decision of the two countries to engage in peaceful dialogue and end their dispute came after the newly elected Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia announced a few weeks ago his government’s decision to start implementing the Algiers Agreement without any preconditions.

Following Ethiopia’s decision, President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea announced his plan to send delegation to Addis Ababa.

The war between the two countries has led to the death of over 70,000 people on both sides. It has also cased destructions of hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth goods, which were on Port of Assab imported by Ethiopian businesses and governments.
