Addis Ababa brings alternative to condo saga

The Addis Ababa City Council has prepared a new proclamation that enables residents of the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, who are registered for 40/60 and 20/80 condominium housing program to build their own houses in plots of land to be prepared by the municipality.

This is indicated on Sunday August 30, 2020 by the newly assigned Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abebe. She made the remark at the time when few political parties are complaining over allegedly unfair distribution of condominium houses that were built by peoples’ money to government officials few months ago.

It is also recalled that the 40/60 housing scheme was launched in consensus with an arrangement that stipulated those who paid hundred percent will get priority. However, when the new government assumed power, this arrangement was nullified by the municipality which has been a bone of contention to this day. The municipality’s housing development office has been sued by the people claimed they deserved priority in accordance with the agreement they had previously.

There are also hundreds of thousands who are registered for condominium houses and still saving money in the bank with an anticipation of winning the lottery someday.

While many who were waiting for the next draw anxiously are grieved by her unexpected remark, there are also some who acclaim the new measure as a good option; since it helps ensure proper monitoring and evaluation by the people themselves. Besides, it helps avoid delay in completion as seen in previous arrangements. Housing is one of the most chronic socio-economic problems in the capital.
