World Trade Organization’s (WTO’s) current Director-General Azevêdo is likely to continue on his position for another term as there was no other nominations for the position of Director-General had been received by the deadline of 31 December 2016.
This is indicated by General Council Chairperson, Ambassador Harald Neple of Norway, who informed WTO members on January 4, 2017. Ambassador Neple said that only the incumbent Director-General has shown interest and become the only candidate for the position.
Director-General Azevêdo confirmed his willingness to serve a second term in the role in a letter to WTO members on 3 November 2016 at the outset of the selection process. DG Azevêdo’s current term comes to an end on 31 August 2017.
