Letesenbet smashes 5,000 meters world record

Athlete Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia last night smashed the world record for 5,000 meters women’s run on track at Valencia, Spain.

Improving her compatriot’s Tirunesh Dinbaba’s 2008 record by four seconds, Athlete Letesenbet completed last night race at 14:06.62. Before the the race Letesenbet, who is 22 years old told reporters that she is going to set a new word record at the Valencia race. As she said, Letesenbet now became the fastest woman on the planet in 5,000 meters.



“Well done and congratulations to #Ethiopia’s daughter #LetesenbetGidey for setting the 5000m new world record. Excellence in action!” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia congratulated Letesenbet. In 2019 at the IAAF World Championships Letesenbet finished 10,000 meters race second. Athlete Letesenbet was born in Endameskel in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia.
