Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia on Saturday visited Koysha hydropower project being built around Omo River.

Currency 37% of the project is completed. The project is recently reactivated following major project delays, it is expected to generate 6,400GWH per year. So far it has created 4,000 jobs and will continue to employ more as the project progresses. Together with our new Koysha project, the dam will be a critical catalyst to positively transforming the area,” according to the twit of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.



With the objective of lighting millions of households and providing power to its growing economic activities, the Government of Ethiopia has been hugely investing in hydropower projects and wind farms over the past years including the over $5 billion mega dam – Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which is completed 76%.

Reports show that in Ethiopia currently over half the 110 million people do not have access to electricity, while some industries have not been able to fully operate because of frequent electric blackouts. The total amount of electricity the country is generating at the moment is estimated around 4,300 megawatts of which the lion’s share is hydropower. When GERD will be completed after a few years, it is expected to more than double the current energy of the country.
