Ethiopia reopens embassy in Asmara

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea attend this morning the reopening of Ethiopian Embassy in Asmara.

President Isais Afwerki has also witnessed the reopening of Eritrea’s Embassy in Addis Ababa a few weeks ago. “Re-opening of the Ethiopian Embassy in Asmara today: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Isaias Afwerki hoist Ethiopian Flag.  Eritrean Embassy in Addis Abeba was re-opened in similar fashion on 16 July 2018),” Yemane G. Meskel, Information Minister of Eritrea twitted this morning.

This has come after the two countries decided to end hostility in the past few months and renewed diplomatic relations and allowed movement of people between the two nations.

After the war broke in 1998 between the two neighboring east African countries, the embassies of both countries were closed for about two decades. The war, which was concluded at the end of 2000 following the UN-mediated Algiers Peace deal, has claimed lives of over 70,000 people on both sides.
